Elopement- 16th century and Today
Picture
  • Elopement in the 16th century was really uncommun because women were married at  12  or 14 years old so they maybe didn't like somebody. Rich women had arranged marriage and had to be happy for that. Even though they liked somebody, they had to not show it or else they will be beatened.
One writer in the mid-16th century said that women and horses needed to be 'well governed'. Another in the late 16th century urged men to treat their wives gently. He compared them to glass vessels that needed careful handling. Women were seen as 'the weaker vessel' even though most of them had to do hard manual work.
Women were animals at that time for men. Only rich men that loved a girl can marry her.
Even though, in the 16th century, some people eloped with their lovers to an other country so they could live happily ever after. But unfortunately, the fathers that weren't happy with that did a human hunting to track them down. If they find them, some will say to never see her again and walk away, or beat him, or even sometimes kill him. even today elopement can be punished in some countries.
So in the 16th century, elopement wasn't the solution to go with your lover. you would:
battle the father in a duel
Or try to talk with the father diplomaticaly, but that would work in that times
Or kill yourself with your beloved like romeo and juliet, but the effect is  not really spectacular
Or you leave her alone for the rest of your life
But either way , in the 16th century, real love didn't exist.
